We went through the best-selling knitting, sewing and craft products on AliExpress and picked seven that people buy by the thousand. There are no expensive machines here: mostly inexpensive supplies and tools that are easy to start with and that long-time hobbyists keep running out of.

How we chose
The main criterion for this selection is popularity. We looked at sales figures, and among products with similar numbers we chose those with at least 95% positive reviews. Where to start if you are a beginner
The simplest way into crochet is a beginner’s kit plus large-eye needles: the kit already has the materials for a first project, and the needles will be needed to sew the pieces together neatly. Once you know you enjoy it, it makes sense to get a set of ergonomic hooks in different sizes and a few balls of yarn for your own ideas.
If you are drawn more to embroidery, a small set of floss, needles and an embroidery hoop will be enough, and you can find a pattern for free or buy one separately. If you want a result without a long learning curve, diamond painting delivers it fastest: there is no technique to master, only patience.
Buying tips
- Check the option you choose. The price on the card applies to the cheapest option. A thread set with 447 colours costs noticeably more than the first figure suggests.
- Buy yarn in one batch, with some to spare. The shade can differ slightly between batches, so for a jumper or blanket it is better to order the whole quantity at once.
- Check yarn and hook thickness. The recommended hook size is usually given on the yarn page. If you are unsure, the 2.0 to 6.0 mm set covers almost every case.
- Allow time for delivery. If you need items for a holiday, order early: parcels take longer than usual during sales.
A word on gifts: a ready-made crochet kit or a diamond painting looks like a complete present and does not require the person to be into crafts already. Yarn, hooks and floss are better given to people who know exactly what they need. All seven items are inexpensive, so you can put together a small kit for a new hobby without serious spending and see which part you like best.
