How to choose a desk lamp: brightness, colour temperature, CRI, flicker and 6 models

Настольная лампа на рабочем столе вечером

It gets dark early in autumn, and more of your time at the desk is spent under artificial light. A bad desk lamp gives itself away quickly: your eyes tire by evening, the screen glares, and colours on paper look different from how they do in daylight. A good lamp does not have to be expensive, but it does need the right specs. We explain which numbers to look at and show 6 popular models from AliExpress.

Brightness: lumens and lux

Manufacturers most often state light output in lumens. For a work desk, aim for 400 to 800 lumens. Below 400, small text and detail strain your eyes. Above 1,000 lumens from a single point, you get glare on the screen and on glossy pages.

What matters more is how much light actually reaches the desk surface, which is measured in lux. For long work and study sessions, 500 to 750 lux on the desk is recommended. The practical conclusion: you do not need maximum power, you need smooth brightness adjustment or at least 3 or 5 steps. Then you can adapt the lamp to the task, the time of day and the general lighting in the room.

Colour temperature

This is the shade of white light, measured in kelvins. The lower the number, the warmer and more yellow the light; the higher, the cooler and bluer.

  1. Around 3000 K and below suits evenings and relaxing. For proper work this light is too relaxing and alertness drops.
  2. 3500 to 4500 K is the best range for work and study. 4000 K is considered neutral white.
  3. Above 5000 K cool light keeps you alert during the day, but in the evening it can get in the way of falling asleep.

A lamp with adjustable temperature is the most convenient. You can work at 4000 or 4500 K in the morning and afternoon, then switch to 3000 K a couple of hours before bed.

CRI: how honestly a lamp renders colours

The colour rendering index, CRI (sometimes written Ra), shows how natural objects look under this light compared with daylight. The maximum is 100. The minimum for comfortable desk work is 80. If you draw, do design work, crafts or make-up, or check printouts, look for a CRI of 90 or higher. Many budget lamps have a CRI of 70 to 80, and colours under them look dull and greyish.

If the CRI is not given in the description, treat that as a warning sign: makers of good LEDs usually do not hide this figure.

Flicker and glare

LED flicker above 100 Hz is not consciously noticed by the eye, but it can still be tiring. Checking a lamp is easy: film it with your phone in slow-motion mode. If bands run across the video, the lamp flickers. Quality drivers work at frequencies from 3,000 Hz, and no bands are visible on them.

A matte diffuser or a honeycomb grille over the LEDs helps against glare. Bare point-source LEDs without a diffuser dazzle, especially if you look at the lamp from an angle.

Be sceptical of claims like “zero blue light”. It is more reliable to look for a mention of testing to the IEC 62471 photobiological safety standard.

Design and placement

The lamp should stand on the side opposite your writing hand: on the left for right-handers, on the right for left-handers. That way your hand does not cast a shadow on the page. When working at a computer, place the base 30 or 45 cm from the edge of the screen and aim the light at the keyboard and desk, not at the monitor or from behind it.

Useful extras are an articulated stand or a flexible head with a wide range of movement, touch controls and memory of the last setting. Do not overpay for higher wattage, apps and dozens of preset modes: they have almost no effect on eye comfort.

One more tip: do not work with a single lamp in a completely dark room. The sharp contrast between a bright spot on the desk and the darkness around it tires your eyes faster. Keep at least a dim general light on.

Which to choose

  1. For your main workspace: the full foldable lamp or the Baseus with adaptive brightness.
  2. If desk space is tight: the monitor light bar or the clip-on lamp.
  3. For reading in bed, student rooms and travel: the rechargeable clip-on, the magnetic mini lamp or the LoraTap.

What matters most when choosing is not power or looks but brightness adjustment, a suitable colour temperature, no flicker and correct placement on the desk. With those in place, even an inexpensive lamp makes long autumn evenings of work much easier.
