Winter boots are usually chosen for their looks and the word “warm” in the description, and then in the first wet snow it turns out that your feet get soaked and the sole slips. Let’s look at which features really affect warmth and comfort, and at six popular AliExpress models that have been bought by the hundred and the thousand.

Insulation: what the grams mean
Winter footwear from well-known brands often states the amount of insulation in grams, for example 200 g or 400 g. This is the weight of insulation per square metre of material: the bigger the number, the warmer the boot, as a rule. The Canadian footwear retailer Canadian Footwear gives these guidelines:
- 100 g: from 0 to -10 °C, for walks and everyday wear, not too bulky;
- 200 g: from -10 to -20 °C, a balance of warmth and weight, suitable for an ordinary winter and moderate hikes;
- 400 g: -20 °C and below, for long spells in the cold, such as ice fishing;
- 600 g: -30 °C and below, for extreme cold, though they feel hot during active movement.
If your winters are rarely colder than -15 °C, a sensible choice is between 100 and 200 grams. Warmer boots are for people who stand outside for long periods without moving.
An important caveat: grams alone do not guarantee warmth. The British men’s magazine FashionBeans stresses that fit, lining and materials affect the result more. A boot that fits snugly without squeezing the foot and leaves a layer of air warms better than a model overloaded with insulation and the wrong size.
Type of insulation
Synthetics such as Thinsulate or PrimaLoft are light, keep their warmth even when wet and dry quickly. Natural down is very warm, but loses its properties once soaked, so it is not the best choice for a slushy winter. Wool keeps you warm even when damp, and in boots it is more often found in insoles and linings. Faux fur and fleece, used in most inexpensive models, work well for city wear.
Waterproofing: membrane and seams
The word “waterproof” in a description guarantees nothing. FashionBeans observes that some footwear is treated only with a water-repellent coating that washes off after a few outings. Real protection from water comes from three things: taped seams, a membrane, and a lower part made of rubber or treated leather. Look for wording like “taped seams” or “waterproof membrane” in the description.
For inexpensive AliExpress footwear this matters even more. If the description gives no information about a membrane, count on protection from snow and short walks on wet pavement, but not from deep puddles. Read reviews with photos: buyers often write about how the boots cope with slush.
Sole: tread and frost
In photos you can hardly see the tread depth and the quality of the rubber, FashionBeans warns. A good winter sole stays flexible in the cold and does not stiffen. Cheap rubber hardens in frost, and that is exactly when boots start to slip on ice. Here is what you can check when buying online:
- a deep tread pattern with separate lugs, rather than a fine herringbone;
- a thick sole that separates your foot from the cold pavement;
- customer reviews on how the sole behaves on ice and in frost.
Size and socks
Sizes differ noticeably between brands, especially once you factor in the thickness of the insulation. FashionBeans advises buying winter footwear half a size up if you wear thick socks. On AliExpress it is better to go by foot length in centimetres rather than your usual size: measure your foot in the evening, when it swells a little, and compare it with the seller’s size chart. Reviews usually say whether a model runs small.
And do not forget about socks. Wool and synthetic blends keep you warm even when damp, while cotton absorbs moisture and your feet get cold faster in it. Good socks and a warm insole sometimes do more than switching to more expensive boots.

Summary
For an ordinary city winter, look for boots with 100 or 200 grams of insulation, taped seams, a flexible sole with a deep tread and half a size of spare room for a warm sock. If the seller says nothing about a membrane, treat the boots as made for snow and dry frost, not for slush. And wool socks and sheepskin insoles can add warmth even to a pair you have already bought.
