Late October is when you start needing gloves in the morning and wool socks at home before the heating is properly on. We picked out the warm items that AliExpress shoppers buy most: each has thousands of sales and at least 95% positive reviews. These are not fashionable puffer jackets, but cheap basics that genuinely help against the cold, outdoors and indoors.

How we chose
Our main criterion is popularity. We looked at the number of sales, seller rating and share of positive reviews, and ranked cheap items with mass purchases above expensive newcomers with no track record. Specifications are taken from product descriptions, and prices are as of 27 October and may change, especially ahead of the 11.11 sale.
A couple of practical tips before you buy. With clothing on AliExpress, sizing is the main problem: Chinese size charts usually run smaller than UK ones, so check the chart on the listing and look for reviews that mention height and weight. And anything worn next to the skin, such as thermals and socks, is best washed once it arrives.
For hands, head and neck
1. Winter touchscreen gloves
The bestseller of the selection, with more than 11,000 orders. The gloves are unisex. The seller describes them as windproof and non-slip, with touchscreen support, so you can answer a call or check a map without taking them off. They are positioned for cycling, motorcycling and walks, so they are closer to sports gloves than classic leather ones. A good choice for cold bike rides and dog walks. Price: £2.84.

2. Thermal fleece beanie
A simple close-fitting hat that you can wear on its own or under a helmet: the seller calls it a helmet liner. It has a thermal fleece lining, is unisex and suits running, hiking and skiing. At £1.64 it makes a handy spare hat for your rucksack or car. A snug hat with no bobble also stays out of the way of a hood.

3. Knitted snood
A snood that goes on over the head and will not come undone in the wind. The seller notes a thicker knit and wind protection, for men and women. A snood is handy because you can pull it up over your face in frost or drop it round your neck indoors. Almost 5,000 sales at around £1.72 speak for themselves.

4. Merino wool socks, 3 pairs
A set of three pairs of thick socks with a terry sole. According to the description, they contain merino wool, in sizes 39-44 (EU), so they are primarily a men’s model. Such socks suit the home, winter footwear and hiking. The terry sole is soft and holds heat well, and merino wool is less scratchy than ordinary wool. The set costs £1.80, which works out at well under £1 a pair.

5. USB heated insoles
The most gadget-like item in the selection. The insoles heat up from USB and can go into winter boots for long walks, fishing or outdoor work. Before buying, pay attention to the size and to how the power is supplied: reviews usually say what the insoles run from and how long a charge lasts. For people whose feet are always cold, this is an inexpensive way to solve the problem without buying new footwear.

Thermal underwear
Good thermals are valuable less in themselves than as a base layer: they wick moisture away from the body while the insulation on top keeps the warmth in. So they should fit snugly but not squeeze. On AliExpress, thermal sizes especially often run small, so the size chart is a must here.
6. Men’s thermal set
A two-piece set: a plain long-sleeved top and stretchy high-waisted trousers. The seller positions it for autumn and winter, and also for cycling and fitness, so this is sports thermal wear rather than pyjamas. Positive reviews are just over 95%, with more than a thousand sales. The price is £6.73 for the set.

7. CHUANGERM women’s thermal set
A women’s option from the CHUANGERM brand: a thin long-sleeved top and trousers. The seller promises a “second skin” feel, meaning the set is thin and close-fitting, easy to wear under jeans and a jumper and not only for sport. At £3.61, it is one of the most affordable ways to keep warm without adding bulk to your outfit.

How to stay warm even with cheap clothes
Warmth comes not from one thick item but from several layers. The base layer, thermals, wicks moisture away. The middle layer, such as a fleece or jumper, traps air. The outer layer protects against wind and rain. If you work up a sweat on a walk, a cotton T-shirt under your jacket turns cold and wet, while thermals cope with this better.
Wool items, socks included, are best washed at a low temperature and dried away from a radiator, otherwise they shrink and lose shape. Touchscreen gloves also dislike hot water: the conductive patches on the fingers can work worse over time.
What to buy first
If your budget is minimal, start with the gloves, hat and snood: together they cost about £6.20 and cover the parts of the body that get cold first. For the home and for boots, wool socks work well, and anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors should look at heated insoles and thermals.
And do not leave the order too late: AliExpress delivery in November usually slows down because of the 11.11 sale, and by then the cold will be the real thing. If you need an item by a certain date, choose an option with a nearer warehouse or faster delivery, if the seller offers it.
