Lack of knowledge in art could have led to unfortunate consequences for three Americans who decided to sell a masterpiece of a 17th-century great artist for a pittance.

After their mother’s death, three brothers inherited a painting, which they immediately decided to sell at a global auction. The canvas was a gift from their mother’s father, who, in turn, bought the painting at a sale during the Great Depression.

Remembering the value of the painting in the family, the brothers set a reasonable price for the lot at 800 US dollars. The description stated that the painting depicts some unattractive people.

The three Americans were utterly surprised when bids on the lot suddenly skyrocketed. Contacting a bidder interested in purchasing the painting, untrained in art, they found out that the canvas belonged to Rembrandt and was called “Olfaction.” Moreover, the painting is part of the “Feelings” series painted by the Dutch artist in the 17th century.

As a result, a buyer from France purchased the painting for 4 million dollars. However, art experts assure that the painting’s value is much higher, and there is an opinion that soon Rembrandt’s painting will be presented again at an auction, but at a much higher price.
