An automatic pet feeder helps in three situations: you are working late, your cat wakes you at five in the morning demanding breakfast, or your pet needs to eat small portions on a schedule. But feeders differ a lot in design, and a poor model can jam with food inside or miss a meal when the power goes off. We explain what to look for when choosing, and show five popular AliExpress models, from simple gravity feeders to smart ones with a camera.

Types of feeder
Gravity feeders
The simplest type: a food container sits above the bowl, and food drops down as the pet eats it. There is no electronics, so there is almost nothing to break. The downside is that nobody controls portions, so this kind of feeder suits animals that don’t overeat. For a cat prone to weight gain, it is a poor choice.
Electronic timer feeders
Food is stored in a hopper, and a dispenser releases a set portion on schedule. Settings are made with buttons on the body. These models work without Wi-Fi and don’t depend on an app, which makes them reliable.
Smart feeders with Wi-Fi and a camera
The schedule is managed through a smartphone app, you can dispense a portion remotely and check the feeding log. Models with a camera let you see whether the pet has eaten. A WebVet review notes that most of these feeders connect only to a 2.4GHz network, which is worth checking in advance.
What to look at when choosing
Hopper capacity
Count days, not litres. WebVet advises dividing the usable hopper volume by your pet’s daily ration and aiming for at least 4-5 days without refilling. For a cat, 2-4 litres is enough, while a large dog needs a bigger hopper or more frequent top-ups.
Portion size
Compare the feeder’s minimum portion with your pet’s daily ration in grams. According to SquareTrade, some models have a minimum portion of around 10 grams. For a cat on a diet, it matters to be able to split the daily ration into 3-5 small meals, which also helps pets that eat too fast.
Kibble size and shape
This is the main cause of breakdowns. Auger or chute dispensers are designed for small and medium kibble. Large kibble for big breeds, and flat or shaped pieces like fish and stars, can jam. Measure the kibble before buying and check it against the description. Wet food must not go into hopper feeders, as they are not designed for it.
Power and backup
This is a critical point. A feeder that runs on mains power alone will simply miss a meal if the power goes off or the plug gets pulled out. Look for models with dual power: an adapter plus batteries as backup. SquareTrade notes that backup power also preserves the schedule settings. If the feeder is USB-powered, you can connect it to a power bank.
Cleanliness and dryness
Wash the bowl every day or every other day, and the hopper and feed path roughly once a month and whenever you change food: fat on the kibble goes rancid. After washing, all parts must dry completely, because moisture glues kibble together and causes jams. Models with a removable stainless steel bowl are more convenient.
Tamper resistance
Clever cats quickly learn to open the lid or knock food out of the chute with a paw. A tight lid with a lock matters more here than good looks.
An important note on health
A feeder carries out a routine but does not set it. It is best to agree the daily ration with a vet. Appetite is also considered an important health indicator: if you never see your pet eat, you can miss early signs of illness. Models with a camera or a feeding log partly solve this. And remember that a feeder does not replace supervision: it doesn’t monitor water and won’t help in an emergency.

Before buying an electronic feeder, be sure to check the power type on the product page, whether there is battery backup, and the kibble size the dispenser works with. These two details decide whether the feeder will work reliably every day.
