Cats drink little, and it is not a whim but a trait of the species: their ancestors lived in arid places, so the thirst drive in cats is weak. Yet a domestic cat needs 30 to 40ml of fluid per kilogram of body weight a day, and more on dry food, in hot weather or during the heating season. A lack of water raises the risk of kidney and bladder problems. A water fountain is one of the simplest ways to get a cat drinking more willingly, as many prefer running water to still. We look at what to consider when choosing, and show 6 popular models and consumables from AliExpress.

Why a fountain at all
Cats are sensitive to the taste and smell of water and often ignore a bowl that has stood for half a day. Moving water instinctively looks safer to them. A fountain keeps circulating water through a filter, so it stays fresh and oxygenated, and the sound of trickling draws the animal’s attention.
But a fountain is not a magic wand. Some cats are indifferent to it, and some are frightened by the sound of the pump. That is why manufacturers and vets advise against removing the ordinary bowl straight away and suggest introducing the newcomer gradually: first pour in a little water with the pump off, then switch on a weak flow once the cat is used to it.
What to look for
Bowl material
This is the main factor. Stainless steel, ceramic and glass beat plastic: their surface is smooth and barely scratches. Plastic gets micro-scratches over time where bacteria and limescale collect, and such a fountain is harder to get fully clean. If your budget allows, choose a model with at least a metal top section, the part the cat drinks from.
Bowl shape and width
A wide, shallow bowl is better: the cat does not have to brush its whiskers against the sides. Constant whisker contact bothers many animals, and they refuse to drink from narrow bowls.
Capacity
Most fountains hold between 1 and 3 litres. For one cat, 1.5 or 2 litres is enough if you are happy to top up every few days. For two or more animals, or if you often go away for weekends, go for 2.5 or 3 litres. A bigger capacity is not a reason to wash the fountain less often, though.
Pump: wired or wireless
Classic fountains run from a USB cable and stay on all the time. Wireless models run on a built-in battery and switch on from a motion sensor when the cat approaches. The advantages: no cable for the cat to chew, and you can put the fountain anywhere in the home. The drawbacks: the battery needs charging, and the models cost more.
Either way, the pump should be easy to take apart. Hair and slime collect in the pump housing and on the impeller, and that is where an unpleasant smell most often comes from.
Noise
Manufacturers almost always write “silent”, but the real noise level is usually not stated. A quiet hum can bother sensitive cats and people if the fountain is in the bedroom. Read the reviews, and put the fountain well away from the bed.
Filters and their cost
Filters are changed every 2 or 4 weeks, depending on the model and the number of animals. Before buying, check whether replacement filters are sold for your chosen model and what they cost: you will go through more than a dozen a year. Rinse a new filter under cold water for about 30 seconds before fitting it.
Water level window
A clear window on the housing is a small thing that saves time: you can see at once whether it is time to top up without taking off the lid. A pump running dry quickly fails.
How to look after a fountain
Change the water and wash the bowl at least once a week, or sooner if limescale appears on the walls. Clean the pump every time you do a full wash: take off the cover and lift hair from the impeller with tweezers or a cotton bud. Plastic parts can be cleaned with a half and half solution of vinegar and water, then rinsed thoroughly so no smell is left. Lemon juice cleans stainless steel well. Many detachable parts can go in the dishwasher, but check the instructions first.

In short: what to choose
- If you have one cat and are not sure it will like a fountain, start with an inexpensive compact model.
- For regular use, choose a stainless steel bowl of 2 litres or more.
- If your cat chews cables, look at wireless models with a sensor.
- Budget for replacement filters from the start, and wash the fountain once a week.
And most important: keep an eye on how much your cat drinks. If it suddenly drinks much more or much less than usual, that is a reason to see a vet, not to change the drinker.
