How to Choose a Car Phone Charger: Power, PD and PPS, Ports and 6 Popular AliExpress Models

Смартфон заряжается в автомобиле

A car charger seems the simplest thing in a car: plug it into the 12V socket and forget it. In reality it decides whether your phone, running navigation, charges in half an hour of driving or slowly loses percentage after percentage. Two chargers of the same size can differ in speed several times over, and it is not only about the number of watts on the packaging. Here is what to look for, plus six popular models from AliExpress.

What to look for

The fast-charging protocol matters more than watts

A phone charges quickly only when it and the charger speak the same language. For modern smartphones the main standard is USB Power Delivery, or PD, over a USB-C port. It is used by iPhone, Google Pixel, most Android phones and laptops. On Samsung, fast charging works through the PPS extension, so for a Galaxy look for PD with PPS in the description. Quick Charge (QC), SCP and AFC belong to older USB-A ports and are useful for Xiaomi, Huawei and Samsung phones from previous years.

If a charger supports only plain 5 V with no protocols, it will charge any device, but slowly, however many watts are printed on the casing.

How many watts you actually need

For most smartphones 20 to 30 W per USB-C port is enough: that is sufficient for fast charging an iPhone and many Android phones. Samsung flagships that support 45 W need a matching port with PPS. If you want to charge a tablet or laptop on the road, aim for 65 W or more on a single port.

Total power and power per port are different things

The most common trap: the charger says 100 or 160 W, but that figure is the total. When two devices are connected, the power is split and each gets noticeably less. Before buying, look in the description or product images for a power distribution chart showing what each port delivers alone and what it delivers when used at the same time. If there is no such information at all, treat the big numbers with caution.

Ports and cable

The best option for most drivers is one USB-C and one USB-A: the first for fast charging your own phone, the second for a passenger, a dash cam or an old cable. If the whole family often rides along, models with three or four ports are handy. Remember the cable: for anything above 60 W over USB-C you need a cable rated for 100 W or more, otherwise the cable will limit the speed.

Size, voltage and protection

A compact charger barely sticks out of the socket and does not get in the way of the gear lever or the cup holder. Look for 12 and 24 V support if you drive a lorry or a van. Overheating and short-circuit protection are useful, as is a voltage indicator: it shows how your car battery is doing. A metal casing dissipates heat better, and a snug fit in the socket stops the charger losing contact on bumps.

6 popular car chargers from AliExpress

We selected models with a large number of sales and a rating of at least 97%. Specifications are taken from the sellers’ descriptions, and prices were correct on 30 October.

1. Budget 6-in-1 charger with display, 3.1 A

The best-selling charger in our selection. It has several ports, including two USB-C, and a digital display. The total current of 3.1 A means this is an ordinary charger, not a fast one: it will top up a phone but will not noticeably speed things up. It suits as a second charger for passengers, or for anyone who cares more about the number of ports than speed.

A compact charger with a single 30 W USB-C port and support for PD, QC 3.0 and SCP. That power is enough for fast charging an iPhone and most Android phones. A good choice if you only charge your own phone in the car and do not want to overpay.

A two-port model: a 30 W USB-C with PD and a USB-A supporting QC 3.0, SCP and AFC. The seller claims 54 W in total. This is the same versatile layout we described above: the driver’s modern phone charges over USB-C, and an older smartphone or dash cam over USB-A.

4. 66 W USB-C charger

An inexpensive charger with a USB-C port and a stated power of 66 W. The seller emphasises fast charging for Xiaomi and Huawei phones and PD support. It is an unbranded option, so treat the stated figure with caution, but for a phone that charges at 20 to 30 W it has plenty of headroom.

Which charger to pick

  1. Just your own phone: a single 30 W USB-C port with PD is enough, like the Essager 30 W.
  2. Your phone plus a passenger or dash cam: a USB-C plus USB-A layout, for example the Essager 54 W.
  3. Laptop or tablet on the road: models of 100 W and above with PD, for example the UGREEN 130 W.
  4. Many devices at once: multi-port models such as the Baseus 160 W, but check the power on each port.

One last practical tip: do not leave a charger with devices plugged in when the car is parked for a long time, unless your 12V socket switches off with the ignition. Even a small current can drain the battery over a few days, especially in winter.
