Sony FDR-X3000 Camcorder: Review and Feedback

Miniaturization of electronics — it’s great. However, as devices become smaller, the quality and functionality proportionally decrease. Especially when it comes to photo and video devices. The Sony FDR-X3000 camcorder is an exception. The Japanese managed to do the impossible. A miniature camera capable of surprising even the most demanding users.

Let’s start by noting that this is a device for recording video. Photographers with high demands for image quality will need a completely different device.

Lens: Carl Zeiss Tessar wide-angle optics (170 degrees). Aperture f/2.8 (crop 7). Focal length 17/23/32 mm. Minimum shooting distance — 0.5 m.

Sensor: Format 1/2.5” (7.20 mm), Exmor R CMOS controller with back-illumination. Resolution 8.2 MP.

In terms of video quality with sound, the camera surpasses its main competitor — GoPro HERO 7. The Sony FDR-X3000 has excellent noise suppression, which is simply irreplaceable when filming in nature.

4K shooting while in motion is not ideal. If you want perfect quality video, you’ll need to use a tripod and secure the camera firmly. However, Full HD 60 fps videos are excellent in any conditions.

Buying large-capacity memory cards makes no sense. The battery lasts about 45 minutes of shooting. Or you’ll need to stock up on a spare battery. A 32 GB flash drive holds 1 hour of video (for Full HD 60p or 4K 30p modes).

The camera lens is not protected. Over time, scratches may appear on the optics due to active use. Professionals recommend immediately purchasing a protective glass, as a full replacement of the optics will cost 50% of the device’s price.

The Sony FDR-X3000 camcorder comes with a waterproof case, which should only be used for underwater filming. Using the camera in the case on land reduces video quality.

Overall, the device is worth its money. In reviews, users recommend not to skimp and to purchase the camcorder with a remote control. This significantly expands the functionality of this miniature device.
