External graphics cards are not new to 3D gaming enthusiasts on portable laptops. As early as 2014, the surge in external adapters significantly excited mobile device manufacturers. After all, for gaming, consumers did not require an expensive built-in graphics platform. Instead, they shifted focus to RAM capacity and processor power. Apple’s support for external graphics cards has made adjustments to the IT technology market.
The zoo of external graphics cards includes devices that either connect the laptop to an additional monitor or imitate the work of a full-fledged graphics card. A clear distinction is needed, which currently does not exist.
Apple: support for external graphics cards
Apple has created conditions for users to connect external graphics cards to their devices. This involves emulating built-in hardware that is supported at both hardware and software levels. Data transfer occurs via Thunderbolt 3 cable. The serial signal is also called DP-PCIe, as it uses the DisplayPort interface operating over the PCIe protocol. This provides high speed (40 gigabits per second) and interchangeability.
Apple’s support for external graphics cards works with macOS version 10.13.4 “High Sierra,” but not all devices are supported. Before purchasing a device, users must ensure that the hardware supports Thunderbolt 3. There may also be issues with graphics card support. Apple does not consider Nvidia GeForce products by default. AMD adapters must be matched with the specifications of the external enclosure.
By enabling support for external graphics cards, Apple notably refused to work with Nvidia, which caused dissatisfaction among fans of the American brand.
Regarding supported devices, MacBook models from 2016 and 2017, iMac, and iMac Pro from 2017-2018 will work with external graphics cards. The adapter will cost the buyer a couple of hundred dollars. This solution is significantly cheaper than purchasing a new Apple product for modern gaming.
