A few tips for cold-weather fishing
The colder the water, the slower your retrieve should be. Make long pauses, reduce the jig head weight and the size of the soft lure, and if there are no bites, try a thinner line. A spare set of gloves and socks in a waterproof bag takes up little room but saves the day if you get wet. Keep your phone in an inside pocket: in the cold the battery drains noticeably faster.
What to buy first
If your budget is tight, start with what affects your catch and comfort most:
- Thin, low-visibility line and a set of micro jig heads, if you fish open water with a spinning rod.
