A portable speaker looks like a simple purchase: pick a colour, glance at the watts, place the order. In reality, watts are what confuse people most, while the things that really matter hide in the small print: the protection rating, real battery life, the number of drivers and whether you can pair two speakers. We go through what to look for, drawing on guides from SoundGuys, TechRadar and the UK retailer Smart Home Sounds, and at the end we show six popular models from AliExpress.

Size matters more than you think
The main rule sounds obvious but works: all else being equal, a big speaker sounds better than a small one. SoundGuys explains it with physics. A larger body fits bigger drivers and passive radiators, sometimes several of them, and the whole setup moves more air. That means fuller bass and more volume in reserve. TechRadar adds that larger speakers are generally louder too.
That does not mean a small speaker is necessarily bad. But when you compare models in the same range, the bigger one almost always wins. SoundGuys’ advice is simple: get the biggest speaker you are actually willing to carry. And if you have two use cases, say cycling trips and a weekend cabin, it can make sense to buy two different speakers, a small one and a larger one.
Smart Home Sounds offers a clear benchmark for hiking: a speaker in your backpack should ideally weigh no more than a bottle of water. At home, weight matters less, so you can afford a heavier, more powerful model.
Passive radiators and bass
A passive radiator looks like a driver but is not connected to an amplifier. It vibrates with the air inside the enclosure and boosts low frequencies. TechRadar recommends looking for models with these radiators if you want noticeable bass in a compact body.
Keep in mind that sound depends heavily on location. SoundGuys notes that placing a speaker against a wall makes the bass stronger, while outdoors it drops off noticeably. People around you also absorb sound, so at a noisy party any speaker sounds quieter than at home. If you can, test it in several places before drawing conclusions.
Water and dust protection: reading the IP rating
An IP code has two digits. The first covers dust protection and the second covers water protection. Here is what is worth knowing:
- IPX4. Splash protection. In TechRadar’s assessment, this is usually enough for the garden and a few drops of rain.
- IPX7. The speaker survives immersion in water, but the letter X means dust protection was not rated at all. SoundGuys and Smart Home Sounds advise bearing this in mind if you take the speaker to the beach or sandy places.
- IP67. Full protection against dust and sand plus immersion. Smart Home Sounds specifies: from 15 cm to 1 m for 30 minutes.
- IP68. Also protected against dust and immersion. According to SoundGuys, this is a level worth aiming for, along with IP67, for outdoor activities.
If the speaker will live in the bathroom or kitchen, splash protection is enough. For hiking, the beach and cycling, go straight for IP67 or IP68.
Battery: divide the promises roughly in half
Figures like “up to 24 hours” are obtained by manufacturers in ideal conditions at moderate volume. SoundGuys calls them a best-case estimate and gives an example from its tests: the JBL Charge 6, rated at 24 hours, lasted about 13.5 hours at a volume close to party level. Volume affects battery life more than anything else, so treat the stated hours as a guide, not a promise.
TechRadar recommends looking for models with at least 10 hours of playback. Fast charging and a USB-C port are useful too: you can top up the speaker with the same cable as your phone. Some models can even work as a power bank and charge your smartphone, which is handy outdoors.
Bluetooth, stereo and speaker pairs
TechRadar recommends aiming for Bluetooth 5 or newer: range and connection stability are noticeably better than with Bluetooth 4.2. Among cheap speakers on AliExpress, Bluetooth 5.3, 5.4 and even 6.0 are already common.
Another point people rarely think about: many popular speakers are in fact mono. SoundGuys gives the JBL Flip 7 and Bose SoundLink Flex as examples, each with one woofer and one tweeter inside. Even if left and right channels exist in one body, the stereo effect is limited by the short distance between the drivers. A pair of identical speakers placed apart in a room works much better. In listings this is usually called TWS. “Sometimes the best upgrade is simply buying a second identical speaker,” SoundGuys writes.
TechRadar and Smart Home Sounds also advise paying attention to multi-device connection: that way friends can take turns playing their own music without disconnecting your phone.
Small features that make a speaker convenient
- An app with an equaliser. TechRadar recommends one for tuning the sound to the location, for example adding bass outdoors and making it more even at home.
- A microphone. Needed if you want to take calls through the speaker.
- Mounts. A strap, carabiner or magnet makes life easier on a bike and on a hike.
- An AUX input. Useful for old players and devices without Bluetooth.

What to choose
For the shower and kitchen, the mini speaker with a suction cup is enough. For the garden and picnics on a small budget, the Zealot S32 fits. If you want an all-rounder with water and dust protection, look at the Tribit PocketGo or Xiaomi Sound Pocket. For loud music with company, go for the Ortizan, and for cycling and hiking, the Tribit StormBox Micro 3 with its mounting. And if you want real stereo, remember SoundGuys’ advice: a second identical speaker often gives you more than moving up to a pricier model.
