After the Huawei brand was placed on the US government’s blacklist, the Chinese brand encountered problems. Firstly, Google, at the request of the US government, attempted to revoke the Android license. In response, Huawei announced its significant contribution to the development of the mobile operating system Android. The growth dynamics of Honor and Huawei smartphone sales on the global market are a compelling argument.
User Support for Huawei
Following the norms of the World Trade Organization, Google is obliged to provide Huawei smartphone owners access to its services. Naturally, this concerns mobile devices purchased before the trade conflict between the US and China. This includes access to Google Play applications and security updates.
At least within Huawei, there is hope that the US government will not violate WTO conditions or amend regulatory documents. The Chinese manufacturer states that it will not abandon its users under any circumstances.
The Visible Future of Huawei
The US-China conflict is a warning to all Asian manufacturers about potential problems that will inevitably arise in the future. By relying on Android for all mobile device manufacturers (excluding Apple and Microsoft), Google can dictate its terms.
To eliminate dependence on the US, manufacturers will need to develop their own operating systems and find software developers. This is currently what Huawei is working on.
This we have already experienced
In the early days of mobile devices, we had several operating systems. Palm, Android, Microsoft, iOS, BlackBerry OS, and a dozen lesser-known platforms that never gained popularity. iOS gained popularity due to its high cost and attractive brand. The other systems self-destructed, trying to earn more through software. Android became successful by chance, thanks to its simplicity, convenience, and free games and applications.
Now, to promote Huawei products with a new operating system, about a million popular and free games and applications will need to be released. To fully detach from Google, it will be necessary to develop a proprietary search engine (Yahoo or Yandex could be options, for example).
There is an opinion that even the most advanced Huawei smartphones at the lowest and most attractive prices are unlikely to make users abandon the convenience of Google services. But time will tell. Currently, the Chinese are actively conducting sociological research to find out what potential buyers value most in a smartphone. Perhaps Huawei will be able to boldly respond to the US and release something grand and appealing to consumers.
