iQOO Neo 12 Launches with a Built-In Fan and 9000 mAh Battery: Price, Specs and How to Cool Your Phone

Игра на смартфоне

Vivo has launched the iQOO Neo 12 in China, a gaming phone with an actual fan inside. Besides active cooling, it brings a 9000 mAh battery, a display that runs up to 185 Hz and the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. It was announced on 28 October and went on sale in China straight away. Here is what the phone can do, what it costs and what it means for buyers in the UK.

The Neo 12 at a glance

iQOO, vivo’s sub-brand, has long focused on gaming phones at sensible prices. The Neo 12 continues that approach with one striking detail: a miniature fan running inside the body. Active cooling used to be found mostly in niche gaming phones, and here it arrives in a mainstream series.

Key specs, according to Notebookcheck and NokiaMob:

  1. Processor: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 plus iQOO’s own Q3 gaming chip.
  2. Display: 6.83-inch AMOLED, 3200 x 1440 resolution, up to 185 Hz, 2200 nits peak brightness.
  3. Battery: 9000 mAh, 100 W wired charging and a bypass charging mode.
  4. Cameras: 50 MP main, 8 MP ultra-wide, 16 MP front.
  5. Memory: 12 or 16 GB of LPDDR5X, UFS 4.1 storage up to 1 TB.
  6. Connectivity: Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, IR blaster.

How the fan works

The fan is tiny: 17 mm across and 4 mm thick, with 59 blades. It works alongside an 8,200 sq mm vapour chamber. According to NokiaMob, heat dissipation is 15% better than on the Neo 11. The fan has three modes: quiet, automatic and fast.

The obvious question with a design like this is water and dust. The manufacturer covers the air intake with two dust meshes, and the fan channel itself is rated IPX8 and IPX9. In China, owners can have the fan cleaned for free at vivo service centres up to 12 times a year, as reported by tech-ish. That service is a quiet admission that dust will get in eventually.

Why put a fan in a phone at all? Powerful processors heat up under sustained load and cut their clock speeds to avoid overheating. In games, that shows up as a frame rate drop 15 or 20 minutes into a session. Active cooling is meant to keep performance steady for longer, and that is exactly what iQOO promises gamers.

What has changed since the Neo 11

The biggest jump is the battery: 9000 mAh against 7500 mAh on the previous model. The screen is almost the same size, 6.83 inches against 6.82, but the refresh rate has gone up from 144 to 185 Hz. One caveat: the full 185 Hz is only available in supported games, and the regular interface runs at a lower rate.

Thickness stays reasonable for this capacity: 8.5 mm and around 225 g in the black and blue versions. The body carries IP68 and IP69 ratings overall.

Price and availability

In China, the iQOO Neo 12 comes in five configurations:

  1. 12/256 GB: 4,399 yuan.
  2. 16/256 GB: 4,799 yuan.
  3. 12/512 GB: 5,099 yuan.
  4. 16/512 GB: 5,499 yuan.
  5. 16 GB/1 TB: 6,499 yuan.

For comparison, the Neo 11 started at 2,699 yuan, so the new generation is noticeably pricier. iQOO has not yet confirmed an international release, so for now this is a China-only model.

What it means if you are buying

You cannot officially buy the iQOO Neo 12 in the UK yet. The Chinese version runs OriginOS 7 based on Android 17, and that kind of firmware usually does not come with Google services out of the box. For most people that is a strong reason to wait for a global launch or pick a phone that is already sold here officially.

The trend itself is worth noting, though. If manufacturers are starting to put fans in mainstream models, overheating in games is clearly a real problem for many phones. The good news is that cheap external coolers, which clip onto almost any smartphone, can partly solve it. They sell by the thousand on AliExpress, especially to players of PUBG Mobile, Genshin Impact and other demanding games.

The short version

The iQOO Neo 12 shows where gaming phones are heading: bigger batteries, faster screens and active cooling. For now it is a China-only release, but you can try the external cooler idea on your own phone for just a few pounds. If your phone runs hot and stutters in games, start with a cooler and finger sleeves, add a controller for long sessions, and put off buying a new phone until global versions arrive.
