Brexit is a shortened form of the phrase “Britain Exit” (the UK’s withdrawal). It refers to the European Union from which the United Kingdom is trying to exit. That is, for Germany, it would be Gerexit, for Hungary – Hunexit, and so on. We understand what Brexit is.
There are plenty of reasons for England to leave the European Union. All of them are closely related to EU legislation. After all, membership in the union obliges Britain to follow all norms, both in politics and in economics.
Brexit: Pros and Cons
England is a prosperous country seeking access to modern technologies and cheap goods. The demand is ready to be met by China, the USA, and India. But the EU trade law limits opportunities, especially in interactions with China.
On the other hand, participation in the European Union opens up the European market to England with minimal tariffs on imports and exports. Considering that England sells 40-45% of all its produced goods to Europe annually, Brexit could lead to an economic downturn.
Refugees are a headache for any highly developed country. EU laws oblige England to accept migrants, provide housing, benefits, and employment. This decision is disadvantageous for the local population. Low-paid refugee labor leads to a decrease in wages for native residents. Brexit will undoubtedly solve this problem. The English will rewrite immigration laws for their own benefit and confidently expel unnecessary people from the country.
The country’s domestic policy is in question. On one side, EU legislation reduces bureaucracy and supports business development. Brexit could severely harm ordinary citizens, especially if a conservative party comes to power. It’s easy to imagine the country gaining new billionaires, while the middle class approaches the poverty line.
Brexit: Tricks of the English Government
The English seem to have calculated all options. Therefore, politicians and diplomats are proposing interesting scenarios after Britain’s exit from the EU. England dreams of remaining in the European economic zone with the same tariffs as within the EU. This is an interesting wish. But such an agreement would likely not be liked by other union members. Everyone is interested in escaping the influence of strict laws while retaining the right to trade.
Currently, Brexit is scheduled for October 31, 2019. At least, the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced this date in his first speech. Opponents of Brexit are doing everything possible to prevent the UK from leaving the EU. With strong opposition support in Parliament, Boris Johnson has a good chance of losing his position after such statements. Time will tell.
