Recently, we tried to dissuade PC owners from buying motherboards and processors with Intel Socket 1200. We explained in simple terms that very soon, DDR5 DRAM memory would hit the market, and manufacturers would release more advanced and super-fast hardware for it. That day has come.
DDR5 DRAM Memory: Specifications
| Memory | DDR5 | DDR4 |
| Bandwidth | 4800-5600 Mbps | 1600-3200 Mbps |
| Operating Voltage | 1.1 V | 1.2 V |
| Maximum Module Capacity | 256 GB | 32 GB |
SK Hynix announced that DDR5 modules have error correction system ECC that is 20 times more reliable. This will surely attract the attention of server equipment owners. Officially, the manufacturer confirmed that the new memory supports Intel Xeon Scalable Sapphire Rapids and AMD EPYC Genoa (Zen 4) server processors.
When to Expect Computers with DDR5 Memory
It’s too early to talk about desktop platforms, but by mid-2021, it’s advisable to save enough for an upgrade. Many motherboard manufacturers have already started developing DDR5-compatible systems.
There are rumors that DDR5 DRAM memory will be installed on Intel LGA1700 and AMD AM5 platforms. However, this situation might change if manufacturers release memory modules earlier than planned. By the way, Samsung and Micron are also working on DDR5 development. Overall, it’s surprising how SK Hynix became the first in this matter.
In summary, we are waiting for early 2021. After the winter holidays, around February 1st, we will get more precise information about new processors and motherboards supporting DDR5 memory. Those who haven’t upgraded their old computers yet – don’t rush. Socket 1200 is no longer relevant, and there’s no point investing in the 10th generation processors.
