The updated Windows 10 is packed with 21st-century technologies, and understanding its functionality can sometimes be challenging even for an average user. After quiet debates about Microsoft’s surveillance of users and data collection on personal and mobile computers, the developers of the commercial operating system once again surprised the public.

Recently, it was discovered that the OS forcibly downloads updates even if the user has chosen to disable the Windows Update service in settings. Notably, the updates are not installed but simply accumulate on the system disk, waiting for the “go” command when the service is started. Cleaning up the accumulated updates on the PC forces Windows 10 to re-download files from Microsoft’s server.

A personal computer owner with a 32 GB storage device was concerned about the constant reduction of free space on the disk and discovered that the problem was caused by Windows 10 tools. The user was unable to disable the download of files from Microsoft’s server independently, so they contacted official technical support on the operating system creator’s website.

The response shocked the user. A Microsoft moderator presented the Russian user with a list of articles from the administrative and criminal codes that they would violate if they tried to disable the update on their own. On behalf of the company, the moderator threatened to sue the PC owner for copyright infringement if they did not stop, as by installing Windows and clicking “Yes,” the user agrees to the copyright statements.

For Russian-speaking users, such threats from Microsoft representatives evoke a smile, since most owners of computers and laptops in the CIS countries use pirated operating systems and have not entered into any agreement with Microsoft, and therefore do not fall under the copyright article.
