The CES 2021 exhibition demonstrated an interesting trend. Laptop and monitor manufacturers completely ignored the 16:9 aspect ratio. And this is very strange, because such a ratio fits exactly within 1080p (1920×1080). Cameras and camcorders are set up for this size. And so are websites with TVs.
The 16:9 Screen Aspect Ratio Is No Longer Relevant
At the CES exhibition, monitors and laptops with aspect ratios of 3:2, 16:10, 32:10, and 32:9 were showcased. The products were presented by well-known brands such as:
- HP (Elite Folio laptop, 1920 x 1280, 3:2).
- Dell (Latitude 9420 laptop, 2560 x 1600, 16:10).
- LG (Gram 17 and Gram 16 laptops, 2650 x 1600, 16:10).
- Asus (ROG Flow X13 laptop, 3840 x 2400, 16:10).
- MSI.
- Lenovo.
- Razer.
What does all this mean and how should users respond?
Considering that Samsung has been producing widescreen monitors and laptops for several years now, much becomes clear. Manufacturers believe that square displays have no place on the desktop. The 16:9 aspect ratio is just another fashion trend, nothing more.
It is very hopeful that some aspects of the old 4:3 or 5:4 formats will remain. Because squares are convenient for working with text and graphics for many people, especially those who set up 2-3 monitors on their desk for work convenience.
