Apparently, American engineer Kyle Karstens saw a fantastic film from the USSR era called «Kin-dza-dza», directed by Daneli G.N. Otherwise, it’s hard to explain how the innovator came up with the idea to build a scaled-down prototype of a car operating on the principle of a windmill.
Wind-powered car
The creation was printed by the American inventor on a 3D printer and presented to the world. For hundreds of years, the inhabitants of the planet have used the power of the wind to move ships across the sea, so moving land vehicles in the same way is considered an evolution step. This is the belief of the innovator.
The American engineer named his prototype Defy the Wind, which translates from English as: “Challenging the wind.” The name suits the new vehicle because it can move in any direction, regardless of the wind’s direction.
The mechanism of the car is simple. A windmill is installed on the roof of the vehicle in a horizontal position. Four scoop-shaped sails, under the influence of the wind, simply spin the flywheel, transmitting torque to gears installed inside the car. According to the author’s idea, with the help of a pair of gear reducers, the torque is transferred to the rear wheels, driving the vehicle.
Interestingly, internet users responded positively to the engineer’s proposal and suggested their own modifications with the installation of electric motors and batteries for energy storage. Looking to the future, the innovators planned for the vehicle to travel on electricity even in calm weather.
