Every year, dozens of films fall into the science fiction category. But there’s often nothing worth watching. Some zombies, talking animals, or mythological heroes. No offense to the masterpiece “The Mandalorian.” Sometimes, it seems that film producers or marketers do not fully understand the difference between science fiction and fantasy plots. TeraNews decided to share its own list of truly great epics that can be watched for hours without taking eyes off the screen. The best science fiction series can immerse viewers in a world of new sensations.
The Expanse (Space)
The series is based on the eponymous cycle of works by authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under the pseudonym James S. A. Corey). The “Expanse” saga can confidently be called a masterpiece in the world of science fiction. The director and producer managed to create a highly realistic film about space and its inhabitants. Plot holes are present, of course, but not abundant. Many laws of physics are preserved in the film, which is very pleasing. And the plot itself is very coolly twisted. Most importantly, the author continues to write books, and the studio continues to shoot the series season by season.
Science fiction is designed for adults. Besides elements of action and detective genres, the series includes politics. It is easier for an adult to understand the plot, as it is built on relationships between races. The series resembles a flywheel that gradually spins, revealing the secrets of the storyline.
Dark Matter
The film is good with a dynamic plot. It is more science fiction with an action tilt. Fights, chases, shooting, blood – you won’t get bored in front of the TV. The cast is well-chosen, and the characters’ actions always make sense. The only thing is that the first episode is a bit confusing – nothing is clear about what is happening. But that is the authors’ intention. The film begins with the spaceship crew coming out of hibernation and having no idea what happened before.
The creators of the series complicated the plot – there are no smooth transitions from season to season. Sometimes it feels like different producers shot each season. But the storyline remains intact. The special effects are impressive – it sometimes seems that the action is happening in real life.
Killjoys
This is one of the few science fiction series that excellently details the outer world on different planets. It is evident that a significant amount of money was invested in filming. The actors were also well worked on. Like in the series “Dark Matter,” the first episode of the first season does not evoke enthusiasm. But as you delve deeper into the plot, you can’t tear yourself away from the screen.
The series is great. It features acting, special effects, and fights. Spacecraft are well-detailed, with interesting weapons, technologies, and unusual aliens. A downside is the propaganda of non-traditional orientation. Firstly, it is done very unprofessionally, even sarcastically. Secondly, it is not always appropriate. It feels like the plot was filmed first, and then scenes were inserted.
Firefly
It is hard to classify the series as science fiction because it is difficult to believe what is happening on the screen. From the laws of physics to the weapons of the heroes and cheap special effects. Sometimes it seems that the series is shot in one room, changing decor.
But. The plot of the series is wonderful. There is nothing like it in any other series or movies. The actors’ teamwork and the engaging storyline are impressive. Fights, shooting, love, a bit of horror – the series is a breath of fresh air. The studio shot only 1 season. After an 18-year hiatus, a feature film sequel with the same name was released. And it is quite good.
Top Science Fiction Series
Among the worthy series, “Altered Carbon” can also be added. But it is for enthusiasts. It will definitely appeal to fans of the cyberpunk genre. It cannot be said that the film is a breath of fresh air, but the author’s concept is unusual. On the plus side, the production quality and acting are commendable. It is pleasing that the series is managed by Netflix. Only they know how to shoot the best science fiction series in the 21st century.
For classic lovers, we recommend rewatching the films “Dune” and “Children of Dune.” Mini-series lack impressive special effects, but the plot surpasses the above recommendations. Once immersed in the film, viewers will stop noticing the graphics of the past century. An excellent series of all time and peoples.
