Cookies

A cookie (sometimes called a local storage object or LSO) is a data file placed on a device. Cookies can be created using various network protocols and technologies such as HTTP (sometimes referred to as "browser cookies"), HTML5 or Adobe Flash. For more information about the third-party cookies we use for analytics, please see the Cookies and Tracking Technologies table in this Cookies and Tracking Technologies Policy.

Web beacons

Small graphics or other web programming code called web beacons (also known as “1 × 1 GIFs” or “clear GIFs”) may be included in the pages and messages of our online service. Web beacons are invisible to you, but any electronic image or other web programming code inserted into a page or email can act as a web beacon.

Clean gifs are tiny graphic images with a unique ID, similar to the functionality of cookies. Unlike HTTP cookies, which are stored on the user's computer's hard drive, transparent GIFs are embedded invisibly into web pages and are the size of a dot at the end of this sentence.

Deterministic fingerprint technologies

If a user can be accurately identified across multiple devices, for example because the user is logged in to a system such as Google, Facebook, Yahoo or Twitter, it is possible to “identify” who the user is in order to improve the customer experience.

Probable fingerprint

Probabilistic tracking relies on the collection of non-personal data about device attributes such as operating system, device make and model, IP addresses, ad requests, and location data, and statistical inference to associate multiple devices with a single user. Note that this is achieved using proprietary algorithms owned by probabilistic fingerprinting companies. Also note that EU IP addresses contain personally identifiable information.

Device graph

Device charts can be created by combining non-personal data about the use of smartphones and other devices with personal login information to track interactions with content across multiple devices.

Unique identifier header (UIDH)

“The Unique Identifier Header (UIDH) is the address information that accompanies Internet (http) requests transmitted over the provider's wireless network. For example, when a buyer dials the seller's web address on their phone, the request is transmitted over the network and delivered to the seller's website. The information included in this request includes things like device type and screen size so that the merchant's site knows how best to display the site on a phone. UIDH is included in this information and can be used by advertisers as an anonymous way to determine if a user is part of a group that a third-party advertiser is trying to establish.

It is important to note that UIDH is a temporary anonymous identifier included in unencrypted web traffic. We change UIDH regularly to protect the privacy of our customers. We do not use UIDH to collect web browsing information, nor do we broadcast individual web browsing information to advertisers or others."

Inline script

An embedded script is a program code designed to collect information about your interaction with an online service, such as the links you click. The code is temporarily downloaded to your device from our web server or third party service provider, active only when you are connected to the online service, and then deactivated or deleted.

ETag or object tag

A caching feature in browsers, ETag is an opaque identifier assigned by a web server to a specific version of a resource found at a URL. If the content of the resource at that URL ever changes, a new and different ETag is assigned. Used in this way, ETags are a form of device identifier. ETag tracking generates unique tracking values even if the consumer blocks HTTP, Flash, and/or HTML5 cookies.

Unique device tokens

For every user who accepts push notifications in mobile apps, the app developer is given a unique device token (read it as an address) from the app platform (e.g. Apple and Google).

Unique device identifier

A unique set of numbers and letters assigned to your device.
