After a couple of decades, we have returned to where we started. Namely, buying a personal computer in a box that needs to be assembled beforehand. At least, this is the startup from San Francisco that caught the attention of internet users. Framework Laptop is a bit different from a PC, as it is a laptop. But this does not change its special status.
What is Framework Laptop
Framework Laptop is a project that offers a modular system for laptops. The feature of this proposal is that any user can repair, customize, and upgrade the laptop themselves. Even without technical skills in disassembly.
The system was invented by Nirav Patel, a former employee of Apple and Oculus. The idea to create technology for people has long been born in the engineer. Nirav is one of those buyers who dream of returning to the golden era (the 20th century). Because it was possible back then to buy technology for 10-15 years ahead and simply upgrade it to improve.
By the way, many audio equipment manufacturers (for example, Yamaha) still support this modular system. Offering to install modern boards into old devices. Why not do the same with laptops?
Basic Configuration of Framework Laptop
The most pleasant aspect is that the engineer does not try to promote some outdated hardware. Nirav Patel based the motherboard on the 11th generation Intel processors and complemented it with a 15.5-inch screen (2256×1504 dpi). From there, the consumer can decide what they want to do with their constructor:
- DDR4 memory from 8 to 64 GB.
- NVMe storage from 4 TB and above.
- Any battery from 55 Wh* and more.
- Wireless modules (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LTE).
- Keyboard, screen, or front panels.
- Card readers and other expansion boards (DP, HDMI, COM, USB).
Flexible Software Architecture
This mostly concerns laptops that manufacturers tie to a specific operating system. Framework Laptop is not planned to be tied to anything. There will be no hardware restrictions on installing any version of Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, or macOS. You can even deploy Android on a virtual machine.
The launch of sales for the Framework Laptop constructor is scheduled for spring 2021. Prices have not yet been announced, but queues are already starting to form. It is not certain that this startup will succeed, as it is a serious blow to the market leaders’ wallets. Most likely, it will end with Nirav Patel selling his creation to one of the industry giants. And the project will acquire the status of a “toy”.
