How to determine which apps are draining your MacBook battery

Every MacBook owner wants to use the device efficiently and comfortably. But sometimes you may encounter a situation where the laptop battery quickly loses its charge, and you are left without a working gadget at the most inopportune moment. This can be annoying, so we suggest you learn how to identify and deal with "gluttonous" processes.

How to determine which apps are draining your MacBook battery

Quickly check applications that consume significant amounts of power

The first way to check which apps are draining your MacBook battery is to look at the battery icon in the top right corner of the screen. If you click on it, you will see the battery percentage and a list of applications that use a significant part of the energy. It is they who reduce the operating time of the gadget.

If you are not using these applications, it is best to close them to save battery. You can right-click the application's icon in the Dock and select Exit. If you use a browser that consumes a lot of energy, we recommend that you close all unnecessary tabs or switch to another browser, such as Safari - this program is optimized to run on Macbook Apple.

Get a general overview with system settings

If there is not enough battery data and you need more information, you can use the system settings. This is the place where various MacBook settings are changed: privacy, security, display, keyboard.

To open the menu, follow three simple steps:

  • click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen:
  • select "System Settings";
  • go to the "Battery" section in the sidebar.

Here you can view the battery level for the last 24 hours or 10 days in a graph. The green bar below the graph will show you the time you charged your MacBook. Spaces indicate periods when the device was inactive. You can see a list of apps that consumed the most power during the selected period. This will help you determine which apps are frequently draining your MacBook battery.

Check Energy Consumption with Activity Monitor

This is a built-in application in macOS that shows what programs and processes are running on the device and how they affect the performance and resources of the computer. "Activity Monitor" is located in the "Others" folder of the LaunchPad menu.

Here you will see different tabs, but you need the Energy section. You can sort the list by parameters, "Energy impact" and "Consumption per 12 hours". The higher these values, the more power the application or process consumes.

If you find that some applications or processes are consuming too much energy and you do not need them, it is worth closing them. Select an application or process in the list and click on the "x" icon in the upper left corner of the Activity Monitor window. Then confirm your action by clicking on the "Finish" button. But be careful, because terminating unknown processes can disrupt the system.
