Quintillion calculations per second in Chinese

The Chinese are seriously working on building a supercomputer with a capacity that will surpass the quintillion calculations per second mark. The computer has already been named Tianhe-3, and the presentation date is scheduled for the end of 2020. However, experts do not rule out that the Chinese may need less time to fulfill their own promises.

The saga of building supercomputers began with sanctions imposed by the USA. The ban applied to the export of chips to China for building computing power to assist scientists in research. The Chinese responded to the restrictions with understanding and built their own chip manufacturing plant, depriving Americans of the monopoly.

Supercomputers help scientists carry out innovative projects, create medicines, and forecast the weather. Part of the capacity is taken up by the defense industry, which does not disclose information about the use of supercomputers to the public. On the global market, China is only challenged by Japan and the USA, but according to some media reports, in 2018 the leadership will be taken by the Chinese, who will put into operation the Sunway Exascale supercomputer. Replacing Sunway TaihuLight, this computer will leave Japanese and American supercomputers far behind for a long time.
