The United States of America, for the first time in 12 years, managed to take the top spot in the supercomputers ranking. And this is against the backdrop of a reduction in the number of the most powerful computers located in the USA, in the context of the global TOP-500 ranking.

SupercomputerAmerica’s leadership in the ranking was announced on June 25, 2018, in Frankfurt (Germany). The American platform Summit, with a performance of 200 petaflops per second, took the first place. The supercomputer contains 4,400 nodes, each built on the basis of six NVIDIA Tesla V100 graphics crystals and two 22-core Power9 processors.

Additionally, the server is equipped with 512 gigabytes of DDR4 RAM and 96 GB of high-bandwidth memory. The servers are connected to switches transmitting data at a speed of 100 gigabits per second. The most powerful computer in the world does not run on the Windows operating platform. The manufacturers entrusted the “Vершина” platform to Linux – Red Hat Enterprise 7.4. The supercomputer consumes 13 megawatts per hour. It is cooled with water. Each second, 250 liters of water are used to dissipate heat.
SupercomputerThe second place in the ranking went to the Chinese. Notably, the supercomputer Sunway TaihuLight has half the performance, only 93 petaflops per second. China had no chance to win in the battle.

The third place was also taken by Americans with the Sierra platform. The computer is built similarly to the leader. The same IBM Power9 processors and NVIDIA Tesla V100 graphics cards. Performance – 71.6 petaflops.
