Have you been using your smartphone for a few months or years and suddenly noticed an overheating problem? There are several explanations for this. Let’s briefly explain why the phone heats up during charging and how to deal with it. We are talking about heating above 50 degrees Celsius, when the heat from the smartphone’s body is significantly higher than the temperature of any objects in the room.
Why Does the Phone Heat Up During Charging
- Faulty switching power supply unit. In the power supply, due to voltage surges in the network, the microchip overheats, which either shorts or changes the outgoing current. In such cases, both the smartphone and the power supply block heat up. Since the design of the power supply is disassemblable (block and USB cable), the switching power supply can simply be replaced. You can take one from a tablet or buy it in a store. Repairing the power supply is not cost-effective.
- Poor contact between the charging cable and the phone. This happens if the smartphone is lying on the edge of a table, with the cord constantly hanging. In such cases, the power supply does not overheat, but the phone’s body becomes hot. You need to replace the cable and check the quality of charging. In rare cases, the charging port on the smartphone may need to be replaced.
- Phone activity during charging. Multiple online applications force the processor to work hard, which causes the smartphone to heat up. During charging, relevant services on the phone are launched to control the power controller. All these applications further load the processor. Simply close unused programs and leave the phone to charge.
- Unsuccessful firmware. This issue affects cheap Chinese smartphones, which manufacturers often release with a raw operating system. Chinese manufacturers themselves do not always know why the phone heats up during charging. However, they always recommend rolling back the firmware if problems appear. Apple products do not have this issue.
In general, strong heating of the smartphone during charging is a first warning sign that something is wrong with the device. There are actually dozens of options, including microcracks on the circuit board after dropping the phone, damage to USB traces from incorrect cable insertion, or even software glitches.
