Detailed review of the set-top box on the Technozon channel (all author links at the end of the article):
Xiaomi Mi Box S: Advantages
The hardware of the set-top box hides a wealth of functionality, which gradually unfolds with updates.
- Auto Frame Rate. Initially, in 2018, the Xiaomi Mi Box S did not automatically recognize the synchronization of sound and video. After the update, hardware and software processing (decoding) started working perfectly.
- Full-fledged transmission of information over Wi-Fi 5GHz standard. That’s 200/200 Mbps for upload and download. The issue of network bandwidth is immediately resolved. In fact, a wired 1Gbit channel is unnecessary. The only nuance is the router. Network equipment must support stable data transfer within the specified range.
- Combined output for connecting audio equipment. By default, it’s a classic 3.5mm jack. But, with an adapter, you can connect via S/PDIF optical. The combined solution is great. Only the adapter is not included in the kit. It can only be purchased in Chinese stores.
- Very high-quality remote control. Both the body and buttons. Everything works perfectly even after a year — just like out of the box.
- The Xiaomi Mi Box S is designed for streaming online videos from Netflix and Live. Of course, registration is required. But that’s a minor detail. For fans of new movies in 4K with HDR support, there are dedicated buttons on the remote that automatically launch the corresponding apps. After registering on the platforms and fine-tuning, getting used to Netflix and Live TV is easy.
- HDMI CEC support. A very convenient feature that allows controlling the set-top box with the TV remote (or receiver). Of course, not all buttons work. But turning on, turning off, and controlling playback are possible. And that’s all you need.
Xiaomi Mi Box S: Disadvantages
After a year since the release of the Xiaomi set-top box, some flaws have become apparent during operation.
- Poor Wi-Fi performance in the 2.4GHz frequency range. The characteristics claimed by the manufacturer for the 802.11n standard do not match reality. Testing was conducted on both cheap routers like TP-Link with Tenda and premium equipment like Asus with Cisco. The set-top box randomly disconnects or drops Wi-Fi speed. The conclusion is to upgrade to a 5GHz channel and operate only on it. Accordingly, purchase a modern Wi-Fi router.
- Auto Frame Rate does not work in all applications. For tech-savvy users, this is not a problem. Just go into the menu — select the desired video or audio decoding format. But for most owners unfamiliar with IT, this shortcoming causes inconvenience.
In conclusion
For audio enthusiasts (DTS-HD, Dolby Atmos, and other codecs requiring licensing), the Xiaomi Mi Box S is not suitable. It’s better to look at newer and more expensive TV boxes. Is it worth buying the 2018 model now? It’s better to prefer other devices. In the $60-70 price range, you can find a better solution. If considering the secondary market for set-top boxes, a used Xiaomi Mi Box S costing $20-30 is an excellent investment.
