HDMI vs DisplayPort - diseases of modern monitors

The purchase of two MSI Optix MAG274R monitors for our web studio was a real gift. The gaming series is ideal for working with graphics, videos and texts. I was very pleased with the transfer of halftones and shades, which, according to the code, exactly match those desired on the iPad screens. During the operation of MSI monitors, we encountered very strange problems. We share experience.

What we want from gaming monitors - "Bread and circuses"

For a 27-inch diagonal, FullHD resolution, HDR and 1 billion colors, the $350 monitor price is very worthy. It was because of these technical characteristics and cost that 2 monitors were bought at once. After a long setup, we managed to achieve good quality photos and videos.

During operation, flaws began to fall out slowly. Moreover, those that can not always be seen even in monitors of the budget segment:

  • Incorrect work of HDR in video and games.
  • Resetting the display frequency to 75Hz after exiting the game (originally set to 144Hz).
  • The appearance of artifacts on the screen when the monitor is turned on.

HDMI vs DisplayPort - MSI's strange savings

MSI Optix MAG274R monitors come with an HDMI cable. It even has signal filters. But the HDMI version is not listed anywhere. Seemingly kind. As it turned out, only the appearance of the cable is of high quality. In the context of different brands, the price of HDMI and DisplayPort cables of the same length is identical. What's the point of putting only HDMI in the package, it's not clear. After all, there is a DisplayPort connector - give the appropriate cable.

And if you are already offering to buy a gaming monitor, then provide it with quality accessories. Let the equipment come out at $ 10-20 more expensive. But the user will receive the desired assortment of wires for connecting to a PC. Already for the soul takes such an attitude towards the buyer, who buys a monitor for at least 5 years in advance.

DisplayPort is better than HDMI - proven by experience

The first six months of operation of the monitor sometimes infuriated with the inoperability of HDR and the drop in the screen frequency. But, otherwise, everything completely suited all the people of the Web-studio. The problem with artifacts has appeared only on one monitor so far. It was a black vertical bar in the middle of the screen when turned on. Or dimming a third of the screen on the left side of the display.

We would like to take this opportunity to say hello to MSI Technical Support. What's the point of creating it if it doesn't work. We turned, for fun, to the Asus service center. And we were given the answer - change the HDMI cable out of the box to a normal DisplayPort. Which is what was done.

Oh miracle!

We have lost this unpleasant artifact when the monitor is turned on. HDR worked properly, the screen frequency stopped spontaneously resetting after exiting games. The brightness of the screen has noticeably increased, initially they thought that it was necessary. Just 1 $15 DisplayPort HAMA cable solved all our problems.

I would also like to try a high-quality HDMI cable. But there is no desire to spend money for the sake of this fun. Perhaps a decent brand cable will work just as well as purchased DisplayPort. Who cares - test, tell.

And we wish the best for MSI. It seems that you make good monitors, the necessary technical characteristics. The equipment and service are just awful. You say we got a bad model. But we also stuck a DisplayPort cable into the second monitor. And there is a difference with HDMI. You have a problem - fix it. And change the technical support workers - they don't want to work.
