Israel Takes on Face Recognition Protection

While Apple developers are working on face recognition algorithms for their smartphones, Israelis have developed a protection against the Apple brand. A special algorithm tricks the camera so that facial features are incorrectly identified. The result is the impossibility for specialized software to recognize the face.

The owner of D-ID, Gil Perry, assured the public in a statement to the media that the program’s algorithm will block face recognition with a 90% probability. Google, Facebook, and Baidu algorithms will not be able to match digital photos created by the protection algorithm with the facial features of a real person.

The idea to create such an application originated with the author during military service. While traveling in South America with a friend, the developer received an order from his superiors not to take photos during the trip or publish photos upon returning home. Then the friends decided to create a way for face recognition algorithms to receive false information without violating the commander’s orders.

The result is a recently founded company that, by implementing a special algorithm, will soon offer solutions to many internet users. It is hoped that a privacy-preserving program will be available to users in the near future.
