Mother’s Day is an international holiday celebrated on the second Sunday of May. It is dedicated to all women who have children. In some countries, congratulations are also accepted from pregnant women who are about to become mothers.
Mother’s Day – history, customs, symbolism
It is difficult to get an exact reference to who invented this holiday. But many books from the 17th century mention the second Sunday of Great Lent, when children honor their mothers. From later sources (19th century), there are references to a day of unity among mothers for peace worldwide.
In Europe, the holiday is called “Mother’s Sunday.” On this day, children visit their parents (if they live separately) and congratulate their mothers. Usually, children give their parents flowers and gifts.
In some countries (America, Australia), there is a tradition to wear a carnation on Mother’s Day. A red carnation indicates that the mother is alive, and a white one is worn in memory of a departed loved one.
What to give mom on Mother’s Day
The best gift is simply to call if there is no time for a personal meeting, and say: “Mom, I love you!”. When meeting in person, a nice gift would be a lush bouquet of flowers. Valuable gifts are a personal matter for each person, and advice in this matter would be inappropriate. But it is better to give gifts that will forever remain in the memory of the most loved and close person.
