Scientists from the United Kingdom have gathered evidence that people are capable of recognizing the signs of illnesses and acting accordingly. When they notice symptoms in their own bodies, they tend to take medications that improve health. And when they observe signs of illness in others, they avoid contact with infection spreaders.
People Can Recognize the First Signs of Illness
The English scientists did not discover America – coughs, runny noses, and sneezing are inherently recognized by people as signs of illness. However, it is premature to draw hasty conclusions, as such symptoms can also be associated with allergic reactions, which are present in a third of the world’s population.
Regarding the scientists’ conclusion, the inference was made based on a study conducted on two groups of people. The experimenters injected vitamins into one group, and harmless protein antigens that cause temporary fever into the other. Afterwards, the participants were photographed, and the cards were shown to other volunteers, who then identified the signs of illness.
Interestingly, based on the photographs, respondents identified sick people with a probability of 60%, while 70% of volunteers agreed that there were no illnesses. However, when viewing patients from both groups, the accuracy of correctly identifying infected individuals increased to 95%. It turns out that red eyes, pallor, and a vacant stare are difficult to determine from photos.
