Scientists from Brigham Young University, located in the USA in Idaho, have established that running reduces the negative impact of stress on the body and improves the function of the hippocampus. This is an area of the brain responsible for memory.
Running exercises help improve memory
The scientific studies were published in the journal Neuroscience. Microbiologists believe it is premature to draw conclusions. The experiments were conducted on mice, which have a brain structure similar to that of humans.
Regarding the experiment, the mice were divided into 4 groups. The first and second groups were equipped with wheels for running. Over four weeks, the animals ran about 5 kilometers daily. The third and fourth groups led a sedentary lifestyle. Daily, groups 2 and 4 of mice were subjected to stress — the rodents were thrown into a cold water tank and an earthquake simulation was conducted in their habitat.
The results showed that mice from the second group demonstrated better results in memorizing routes in mazes. The animals from the third group, which remained in a comfort zone throughout the experiment, showed low results. We will have to wait for experiments with humans to confidently say that running helps improve memory.
