How far technology has advanced. The German Institute for Telecommunications Equipment Development Fraunhofer has come up with a know-how. Elements of threaded connections (bolts) with an electronic mechanism. It may seem strange to implement this project. But it is quite the opposite. Smart bolts are extremely necessary in industry and the energy sector.
What are Smart Screw Connection Bolts and What Are They For
Compared to regular fasteners, a smart bolt has built-in electronics. These are sensors to detect displacement along the bolt’s thread relative to the fastener. And a Wi-Fi microchip for transmitting an alarm signal wirelessly to a security panel. Unfortunately, the developer did not specify how the microchips will be powered. And if batteries are used inside, how often they need to be replaced. Judging by the design of the bolt head, power supply is most likely implemented through battery connection.
The standard for wireless data transmission is also not specified. And it doesn’t matter what module is used. Even ancient Wi-Fi a or b would suffice for enterprise and outdoor use in open spaces.
It is clear that smart bolts are definitely not needed for home use. But in construction of structures subjected to dynamic loads, such fasteners will be useful. For example, in the construction of bridges, TV towers, wind power plants, beach houses, or hotels. Everywhere where there is a risk of the bolt unscrewing itself along the thread, a Smart Screw Connection fastener will be indispensable.
