Xiaomi Mi Air Charge Technology – Pandora's Box Opened

Chinese company Xiaomi announced a completely new technology capable of charging mobile device batteries from a long distance. According to the Chinese manufacturer, Xiaomi Mi Air Charge Technology demonstrates wireless charging of smartphones and other gadgets from a distance of a few meters. Moreover, this is not just an idea conceived by the company’s engineers, but a researched and ready-to-launch technology.

Xiaomi Mi Air Charge Technology – what it is and how it works

Xiaomi Mi Air Charge Technology is a device resembling a medium-sized computer speaker. It connects to the power grid and is placed in direct line of sight of the device to be charged. Inside the charging device are antennas. According to the manufacturer, the experimental unit contains 144 antennas. They are designed for directed transmission of millimeter waves. To locate the smartphone or other gadget for charging, a special scanner is installed.

A receiver block is installed in the smartphone or other device. It contains 14 antennas that capture the waves, and a converter capable of transforming microwaves into electrical energy. The charging power is currently at 5 Watts, but Xiaomi is already working on increasing this figure.

Development prospects for Xiaomi Mi Air Charge Technology

The Chinese brand Xiaomi hurried to tell the world that they have no competitors. Just a few hours after the presentation, Motorola released a video demonstrating their own wireless charging device. And it was fully functional, not just virtual.

Conceptually, Motorola’s proposal looks more attractive because the receiver and converter are integrated into a cradle. Therefore, the wireless charging device will suit any smartphone. Xiaomi Mi Air Charge Technology, however, is only compatible with gadgets that have this receiver-converter built-in.

Both brands have interesting ideas. And the development paths for this technology are inevitable. Smartphones have increased performance, fast internet, and impressive cameras. The problem with charging cables has been addressed strangely (referring to inductive devices). Therefore, wireless charging is a very interesting option.

Reviews of Xiaomi Mi Air Charge Technology – disadvantages

The world is fighting to preserve the Earth’s ozone layer, fearing exposure to direct sunlight. Meanwhile, technologies like Xiaomi Mi Air Charge Technology appear. In fact, it involves microwave waves—similar to those in a microwave oven, but of lower power. It’s not guaranteed that all beams will be directed at the receiver, or that the owner of the mobile device won’t cross the line between the source and the receiver.

And, according to social media reviews, there is a suspicion that Xiaomi Mi Air Charge technology and Motorola’s offerings could harm people with implanted pacemakers. So far, no known doctor has commented on the situation, as the technologies have not yet left factories. Hopefully, it won’t turn out like the joke about a frying pan with a uranium coating—cooking food perfectly without oil or fire…
