1965 Ford Mustang Becomes a Driverless Car
On the eve of the 25th anniversary of the Goodwood Festival of Speed (a motorsport event in England), Siemens built a driverless car. The new vehicle is based on the 1965 Ford Mustang. It is planned that the car will ascend a hill and drive along the entire race track autonomously.
The development of the autonomous vehicle was carried out by engineers from Siemens and scientists from Cranfield University (England).
According to the developers, to integrate the electronic components into the car, the Ford Mustang had to be completely redesigned. The exterior shell remained unchanged, but the steering and suspension were replaced. Additionally, for satellite-based positioning on the track, a leading company in this field—Bentley Systems—was involved.
Siemens states that the car was not chosen randomly. The 1965 Ford Mustang marked the beginning of the sports car era in the USA and worldwide. Now, the driverless car dressed in the past is set to step into the future. In a word—it’s all about philosophy.
