APC Smart-UPS — Which Batteries Are Better

APC Smart-UPS — Which Batteries Are Better

Strange uninterruptible power supplies are made by Americans. The APC Smart-UPS has been around for over 15 years and works like clockwork. And without disconnecting from the network – just replace the batteries and enjoy life. However, year after year, these batteries constantly become more expensive, and their lifespan decreases. Perhaps our article will help someone. APC Smart-UPS – which batteries are better to buy. Over the entire period of use (which is 15 years), we have tested 4 different types of batteries. Sharing our experience.

For our APC Smart-UPS (SUA750I), 2 batteries of 12 Volts are used. The original batteries are APC RBC2 (12V, 7.2Ah). It is important to note that APC Smart-UPS supports the installation of suitable-sized batteries with parameters of 12V and 7.0 or 7.5 Ah. And nowhere in the specifications does it say that batteries with such parameters are prohibited. This is for cases where the buyer cannot find batteries with the required parameters for their device.

Original APC RBC2 lead-acid batteries. Dimensions – 64x94x151 mm, weight – 2.5 kg. The price of one battery is approximately $70 (pair – $140). When purchased from an official store, the seller provides a 36-month warranty from the date of purchase. In fact, batteries last longer. From the moment of installation until the warning signal for urgent replacement (red LED on the case), it can take up to 4 years. No more. Plus, only original APC batteries pass capacity testing by the device itself. This is done via console when connected through a USB port.

Alternative Budget Batteries for APC Smart-UPS

The best alternative has always been considered lead-acid batteries CSB GP1272 28W. Made in Vietnam, they demonstrated a decent lifespan of about 3 years. At a price of $15 each ($30 for a pair), it’s an excellent solution. The weak point of these batteries is the plastic case. Closer to the end of their lifespan, CSB GP1272 batteries swell significantly. To remove them from the APC Smart-UPS, the device must be completely disassembled.

Gel batteries LOGICPOWER LPM-GL 12 – 7.2 AH showed good results. Priced at $20 each ($40 for a pair), they do not swell, and surprisingly, they hold a charge longer. They also handle cold starts under load of 70-80% well, functioning like original APC RBC2. Only their shelf life ends right after the warranty period (24 months). Just as expected.

In the budget segment, there is an interesting solution from our Vietnamese friends – KUNG LONG WP7.2-12V batteries. They cost only $13 each ($26 for a pair). But they work well for 36 months, do not swell, and support cold start under load. KUNG LONG batteries are produced in two versions – for the European and American markets. They differ only in the font size of the brand name and weight (Americans are 220 grams heavier than Europeans). The holograms are identical. The secret is unclear.

Which Batteries Are Better to Buy for APC Smart-UPS

From what we tested, in terms of price-quality ratio, it’s better to choose KUNG LONG WP7.2-12V. The name is intimidating, but it’s the most cost-effective. Plus, it offers a decent lifespan and functionality. Even the weight of 2.4 kg per battery indicates it’s a good battery. Original APC RBC2 batteries outperform all competitors in longevity. But if you calculate the monthly efficiency, the price of the original is too high.

Other options look dull. Ukrainian LOGICPOWER with a 24-month lifespan is not very attractive. And I no longer want to buy CSB GP1272 due to their questionable build quality.
