The push for standardization of connectors for smartphones and tablets in Europe and the USA is strongly pressuring Apple Inc. Therefore, by 2022, there is a possibility that the iPhone 14 will replace the Lightning connector with USB-C. The manufacturer attributes this to reducing environmental impact. Although, this issue has been discussed for several years. And the company could have taken a step in this direction long ago.

Whatever is said within Apple regarding environmental conservation, the core issue is somewhat different. The Lightning interface, developed in 2012, operates at USB 2.0 level. That is, almost 10 years later, the company is significantly behind in wired data transfer technology. The switch to the USB-C standard is directly related to this.
For example, transferring a 2-hour 4K video with the old interface would take about 4 hours. USB-C, on the other hand, would transfer the video in just 2.5 hours. The Lightning problem also affects charging speed, with all the inconveniences that follow. Apple has two options here – adopt USB-C or develop a new interface.
It is unlikely that the manufacturer will create a new connector, although anything is possible. But moving to a unified interface can be done without any costs. Given Apple’s policy of saving on the latest developments, the decision to switch to USB-C is quite expected.
