The BMW Group plans to replace hydrocarbon energy sources with affordable electricity, announcing its plans to expand the electric vehicle segment by 2025. According to the strategy of the German giant, 25 electrified cars will be introduced to the public. The prototype production will start with the sporty BMW i8 model, which is planned to be further upgraded with an increased traction battery.
Additionally, media reports have leaked that the legendary Mini model, popular among residents of densely populated cities worldwide, will be re-equipped. Rumors also suggest that the X3 crossover will be reconfigured. According to the brand, vehicles marked with “X” will be given a new designation “i”, linking them to electrified products.
The manufacturer guarantees that switching from gasoline engines to electric motors will not lead to a decrease in power. Conventional sports cars, demonstrating 300-400 horsepower under the hood, will delight owners with improved acceleration dynamics, which are much better in electrified vehicles. BMW executives mention 2.5-3 seconds to reach 100 kilometers per hour, giving Lamborghini’s engineers something to think about.
Changes will affect the form factor of battery packs. BMW engineers have decided to standardize capacity storage units, linking them to vehicle lines. A 120 kWh battery is intended for a powerful crossover, increasing the vehicle’s range to 700 kilometers. Lightweight 60 kWh batteries will be installed in sports cars, providing a 500 km range.
Regarding BMW’s subsidiary brands, electrification will affect Rolls-Royce. The British company has abandoned hybrid systems and decided to convert its luxury vehicles to affordable energy carriers. Interestingly, the lineup of high-performance “M” models will not be affected by the company’s engineers. The Germans are not ready to remove internal combustion engines from the assembly lines yet.
