Framework Laptop - what is it, what are the prospects

After a couple of decades, we are back to where we started. Namely, buying a personal computer in a box, which must first be assembled. At least, it is such a startup from San Francisco that has caught the attention of Internet users. The Framework Laptop is not a PC, but a laptop. But this does not change his special status.

Framework Laptop - what is it

 

Framework Laptop is a project that offers a modular system for notebooks. The peculiarity of such an offer is that any user can independently repair, configure and upgrade a laptop. Even without skills in disassembling equipment.

 

The system was invented by a former employee of Apple and Oculus, Nirav Patel. The idea to create technology for people originated from the engineer a long time ago. Nirav is one of those buyers who dream of returning to the golden era (20th century). Indeed, it was in those days that it was possible to buy equipment for 10-15 years in advance. And by means of modernization it is easy to improve it.

By the way, many manufacturers of audio equipment (for example, Yamaha) still support this very modular system. By offering to the old device it is easy to install modern boards. Why not do the same with laptops.

 

Basic Configuration Laptop Framework

 

The best part is that the engineer is not trying to promote some old and irrelevant hardware. As a basis, Nirav Patel took the motherboard for the 11th generation Intel processor family. And supplemented with a 15.5-inch screen (2256x1504 dpi). And then, it is up to the consumer to decide what he wants to do with his designer:

 

• DDR4 memory from 8GB to 64GB.
• NVMe ROM 4 TB and up.
• Any battery from 55 W * h or more.
• Wireless modules (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LTE).
• Keyboard, screen, or bezels.
• Card readers and other expansion cards (DP, HDMI, COM, USB).

 

Flexible architecture for software

 

It concerns more laptops, which the manufacturer binds to a specific operating system. Framework Laptop is not planned to be tied to anything. At the hardware level, there will be no restrictions on the installation of any version of Windows, Linux, FreeBsd, MacOS. You can even deploy Android in a virtual machine.

The launch of sales of the designer Framework Laptop is scheduled for the spring of 2021. Prices have not yet been announced, but they are already starting to write in the queue. It is not a fact that this startup will shoot, as this is a serious blow to the pockets of market leaders. Most likely, all this will end with Nirav Patel selling his brainchild to one of the giants of the industry. And the project will receive the status of "children's toy".
