Annually, we see at the CES exhibition how the Taiwanese brand demonstrates its advanced technologies. We hear the same speeches about breakthroughs in technological processes every time. We listen to how the manufacturer makes promises regarding the affordability of products. And then, every year, we get gaming laptops from Gigabyte with astronomical prices, which underperform compared to lesser-known brands. And all this movement repeats itself like “Groundhog Day” year after year.
Gaming laptops Gigabyte: supply and demand
Once again, the Taiwanese brand offers mid-range hardware in terms of performance. And all of this is wrapped in an attractive package, trying to enter the elite of gaming laptops. This time, Gigabyte offers 2 versions of devices – with 15-inch and 17-inch screens. We will return to this shortly. The specifications are as follows:
- Processor Core i7-10870H or Core i5-10500H.
- DDR4 RAM – 8 or 16 GB.
- Graphics card GeForce RTX 3060 with 6 GB of GDDR6 memory.
- Storage SSD (capacity not specified).
Point of no return in laptop manufacturing
Now, returning to displays. It is claimed that the 15-inch version will support a refresh rate of 240 Hz, and the 17-inch version – 144 Hz. Everything looks great, but one point is overlooked. The GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card, in good quality images, cannot handle such display refresh rates. The maximum is 75 Hz. Perhaps, on older games, Gigabyte gaming laptops will squeeze out 120 Hz. The meaning of 144 and 240 Hz for the GeForce RTX 3060 is unclear. This is already deceiving the customer.
And we still do not know the price of the new laptops. One can recall the saga with the Asus ROG Strix G15 laptop. Which was the first to market with a 144 Hz screen and semi-gaming graphics card. The story ended with the price dropping from $1500 to $1000. Because true gamers never understood the benefit of such a set of components and technologies. There is an opinion that Gigabyte gaming laptops will repeat the fate of their unsuccessful Taiwanese competitor’s model. And all these features like RGB keyboard backlighting will not save the manufacturer.
