Collective crowd platform Kirckstarter raises funds for the release of the LapPi 2.0 constructor. It is aimed at fans of electronic gadgets who prefer to assemble mobile devices on their own. LapPi 2.0 is a Raspberry Pi laptop build kit.

This idea is not new to electronics enthusiasts. In 2019, Microsoft introduced the Kano PC. It's official. Before him, dozens of variations of PCs and laptops were unofficially offered on Habré and Reddit, which could be assembled independently from AliExpress for spare parts. The cost of such solutions was in the range of 100-200 US dollars.

The Kano PC constructor can be called the best solution in terms of technical support and ease of assembly. After all, the set was designed for kids aged 12 and over. Using the Raspberry Pi platform, Microsoft technologists proposed to assemble an 11-inch laptop (or tablet) with minimal technical specifications for the Windows 10S operating system.

 

Such a Kano constructor cost about $300. However, the demand for it was small. As a result, the cost fell to $230 and, after the sale of the rest, the project was closed.

In 2023, this technologically advanced project was decided to revive. Because the demand is still there. In many general education schools with an IT focus, such solutions are of interest. Stops buyers only the price of spare parts from trading floors. On average, a more or less productive laptop can be assembled at a cost of $300.

The LapPi 2.0 kit will start at $160. But. This does not include the chipset. And then, the designer independently chooses the platform. And here is a very interesting choice:

• ASUS Tinker.

These are officially declared chips. And there are a dozen unofficial ones that are inexpensive and guarantee compatibility. Definitely interesting. And not just for beginners or kids. And adults too. Moreover, in different fields of activity. For example, for smart home, machine programming, control panels for system administrators, installation of electronics in cars, musicians and so on.

LapPi 2.0 constructor can hardly be called technologically advanced. The same 7-inch display with a resolution of 1024x600 is the last century. But touch. The kit includes a camera unit, speakers, keyboard, modules for wired and wireless connections, cables. And, what pleases, the case for the assembled gadget. In fact, all this can be bought on AliExpress, but more expensive. And the price of $160 plays a leading role here for the buyer.
