Despite its own automotive industry, Chinese car enthusiasts still prefer American vehicles. Even super cool electric cars from Xiaomi and NIO couldn’t convince the local population to invest in manufacturing within their own country.
This indicates that China’s automotive industry is still at a very low level. Considering the huge sales volumes of imported cars, the Chinese government has reasons to be concerned in 2022.
Tesla Model Y – the most popular crossover
According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), only in December 2021, 40,500 new Tesla Model Y vehicles were sold. It’s hard to imagine how many cars in total were purchased in China over the year since the start of sales. Official statistics report 170,000 vehicles. But this only accounts for official imports.
The second place in popularity is shared by Li ONE (China) and Mercedes Benz GLC. The feature of Chinese cars is their internal combustion engine operation and lifetime manufacturer warranty. Apparently, this fact was decisive for hundreds of thousands of Chinese who chose the Li ONE brand.
In third place, surprisingly, are Audi Q5 and BMW X3. Crossovers are popular worldwide, especially in technologically advanced China. Whatever Americans say about China, especially regarding sanctions against the Middle Kingdom, the Chinese bring good revenue to the US auto industry. It would be foolish to disrupt this harmony in the American economy.
