High Tech Computer doesn't want to die: HTC Desire 20+ announcement

Just recently (5-6 years ago), the HTC (High Tech Computer) brand was heard by many owners of mobile technology. Customers associated HTC gadgets with modern technology and affordability. Only something went wrong and the company flew out of the market in an instant. And now, years later, the "dead" brand made itself felt with the announcement of the new HTC Desire 20+ smartphone.

The fall of the king in the smartphone market

It's very simple - the owner of HTC sold the smartphone business in 2017 to Google for $ 1.1 billion. The giant of the IT industry did not need the gadget itself, but rather technology. Since just a couple of months later, the world saw the technologically advanced smartphones Google Pixel and Pixel 2.

And then, in a strange way, the owner of HTC offered to buy the new Exodus, but only for cryptocurrency (Ethereum or Bitcoin). Moreover, at the exchange rate - 1000 US dollars. And everything somehow froze. Even old HTC equipment, which distributors tried to sell from warehouses at an initial price.

Potential buyers completely forgot about the HTC brand, and many did not even know about it. Therefore, it turned out to be a difficult task for the Chinese brand to return to the mobile market. The manufacturer had to significantly reduce the price of its gadget and place its smartphone in the niche of budget devices. And it is very unfortunate. The HTC Desire 20+ is strangely presented as a competitor for the Xiaomi Note 9 Pro smartphones. Yes, the same one, with a defective camera block, which gets dust.

And one more unpleasant moment - HTC has given up on performance. After all, it was precisely because of the power that buyers made a choice in favor of High Tech Computer products. But in fact, HTC Desire 20+ has turned into a phone for grandmothers. It would be better not to enter the market at all and not embarrass themselves in front of their old fans.

Advantages and disadvantages of HTC Desire 20+

A budget chipset with cores undemanding to electricity, and a 5000 mAh battery, allow the smartphone to work without recharging for up to 2 days. Decent fingerprint scanner located on the back. It works in 10 cases out of 10, which was a pleasant surprise. And then there is a 3.5 mm headphone output, which produces excellent high and low frequencies.

But this is where the advantages end, since the manufacturer did not want to reveal the potential of the Snapdragon 720G platform, but released a cheap phone by all indications:

  • Low-resolution IPS display at 6.5-inch diagonal. Forget about a high-quality picture - it will never be.
  • The body is made of cheap plastic - even Chinese gadgets with unfamiliar names have a more beautiful body, and the phone is more pleasant in the hand.
  • The 48 megapixel camera is about nothing. The optics may be good, but the controller responsible for processing photos from video is budgetary. Do not believe the advertisements showing footage from the HTC Desire 20+ smartphone. We guarantee that this is a fake - filmed with a DSLR camera or a better smartphone.
  • Wireless interfaces are also questionable. The Snapdragon 720G chip supports Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and Bluetooth v5.1. But the manufacturer supplied the old modules. The motivation is not clear, as the savings are 4-5 US dollars per device.

Buy HTC Desire 20+ or choose another smartphone

At a price of 300 US dollars, the HTC Desire 20+ smartphone has many interesting competitors in its technical characteristics. And do not try to look towards the Xiaomi Note 9 Pro. There are more advanced and high quality smartphones. The same Huawei nova 5T... The difference in quality and performance is enormous. Where HTC got such a price from is not clear. Apparently, they spied on Sony, which set the cost by voting. But at least the Japanese make high-quality smartphones. And what HTC offers us - the phone of 2018.

All in all, HTC Desire 20+ isn't worth the $ 300 price tag. The same Samsung Galaxy M11 or LG Q31, priced at $ 160-200, is better for the buyer. Even with less memory, Korean gadgets outperform the Chinese representative High Tech Computer in terms of technical characteristics.

We love the HTC brand, and we actively used it back when it was still on Windows Mobile and the first versions of Android. But what we are offered to buy now is not a High Tech Computer product. This is some kind of semi-finished product that has no place in a shop window with gadgets in the price segment over $ 160.
